According to the dictionary, psychology is defined as the science of the mind or of mental states and processes.
In my search for greater meaning in what I can do, I have decided that the driving force in the search for this meaning will be to help other fellow human beings. In particular, I will like to help the less privileged or individuals who have mental disorders.
The process of creating my own personal development plans has compelled me to reflect deeply to chart my own career roadmap. In order to fulfill my objective of helping the less privileged, I am able to analyze what are the future milestones that I need to achieve in order to allow me to do a better job.
Initially at the start of my coursework in ECU, I had the impression that I will be more interested in focusing on child psychology related work upon graduation due to my affection for children. However, I increasingly find that my interest lies in developmental and abnormal psychology. I become increasingly fascinated with the study of systematic psychological, emotional, and perception changes in a human. As I acquire more knowledge about the human body and the various mental disorders associated with it, I develop a greater interest in the field of treatment and therapy for patients suffering mental disorders.
In order to pursue my interest in this field I have taken the opportunity during an assignment in the class Psychology, Community and Work to interview a Case Manager with the Institute of Mental Health on her experiences. The interview allowed me to appreciate the finer details of her job and the challenges that she face. This helps to prepare me mentally for the various job difficulties that I may face if I were to apply for a position with the IMH.
